A 22-YEAR-OLD Stroud man is to stand trial accused of assaulting his own mother by kicking her.
Bobby Roberts, of Gloucester street, Stroud, pleaded not guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates court today to assaulting Julie Bloodworth by beating her on Tuesday, July 1 this year.
His barrister, Paul Connell, told the court: "He is alleged to have forced his way into the property, where he was living in any event at the time.
"There was an argument between the parties during which he is alleged to have kicked his mother.
"He says that on the night in question there was an argument but he did not kick or assault his mother in any shape of form.
"He also has a witness, his girlfriend, who will be giving evidence.
"Apart from that, the defence say the allegation is a malicious one, a spurious one, and the mother has already been to the police to explain why she made the allegation and to retract her statement."
Roberts was bailed to stand trial at Stroud Magistrates court on Tuesday, October 14.
