AFTER a packed opening the Painswick based Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen's autumn exhibition, as part of its celebrations to mark its 75th Anniversary, continues until November 9. The opening guest speaker was Lucy Abel Smith, an avid collector who stages spectacular exhibitions at Quenington Old Rectory. She spoke passionately about the legacy of crafts in Gloucestershire and how the Guild was at the forefront of keeping the balance of innovation and tradition alive in contemporary crafts. The selling exhibition of contemporary designer craft continues at the refurbished New Brewery Arts Theatre space, in the heart of Cirencester. About 40 members are taking part in the show which is characterised by high quality, one off handcrafted work which cannot be purchased in the high street. Everyone has been encouraged to produce something special to mark the occasion. A wide range of crafts from new and established members is on view including gold and silver jewellery, ceramics, furniture, bookbinding, glass, printmaking plus printed and knitted textiles. New members are always welcomed which this year include printmaker Sue Brown and ceramicist Camilla Ward both from Cheltenham, stonecarvers Richard Bossons and Rita Dawe from near Stroud, together with innovative furniture designer Simon Austin from Bristol. Crafts to appreciate. Open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm, Sunday, 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.

THE SPACE, Stroud's well-loved arts venue, opens its doors for a special show exhibiting the talents of all the various creative groups that meet there. The Space Show will include songs from the Morning Glories, drama from Hexagon Theatre Company, as well as Flies on the Wall and Dramarama Youth Theatres. There’ll be comedy impro from Five Valleys Drama, Egyptian dance with Hazel Kays and street jazz dance with Street Elite. Playing with Words, Jo Bousfield’s creative writing group, will perform some of their work. Performance poetry will also be provided by the two comperes, well-known local poets Adam Horovitz and Crispin Thomas. Jo Bousfield, trustee for The Space, said: "We're having this evening with several aims in mind. Firstly, we feel that it's important that all the different users bond and feel this is our space, that we're not just ships that pass in the night. And we want to welcome people who have never been to the Space before. "Also, it's a fundraiser towards essential refurbishments. We need to lay a new floor and improve the seating. We've set up an 'adopt a seat' scheme, where you can 'adopt' a seat for £25, or for £28 you can get one with a plaque with your name on it." There will be a raffle on the evening and artist Anthony Hodge has donated a piece of his work as one of the prizes. The Space Show is on Saturday, November 15, at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm). There'll be a bar, special drinks and snacks. All tickets £6 available from The Space. For further information call 01453 767576 or visit www.the-space.org. If anyone would like to make a donation or adopt a seat, please get in touch.
